Daniel Levy was pushed out of Spurs by the club’s ownership and replaced with a new chairman on Thursday.
Tottenham Hotspur announced in a statement that Levy had “stepped down” as executive chairman of the Lilywhites after running the club for a quarter of a century.
Peter Charrington, a former banker who was appointed to the club’s board in March, has stepped into the new role of non-executive chairman.
The Athletic reports that Levy did not leave of his own volition, but was “removed” by the Lewis family, Spurs‘ majority shareholders.
The decision came after the Lewis family enlisted a management consultancy firm to conduct a review into why the team was performing so badly. Although Levy has overseen huge financial growth over the past two decades at Tottenham, they have won just two trophies under his stewardship and endured their worst ever Premier League campaign last season, finishing 17th in the table.
Levy was named chairman in 2001, months after ENIC, which is owned by the family trust of Joe Lewis, bought almost 30 per cent of the club from Alan Sugar in December 2000.
“I am incredibly proud of the work I have done together with the executive team and all our employees,” said Levy, who retains a 25 per cent stake in Spurs.
“We have built this club into a global heavyweight competing at the highest level. More than that, we have built a community. I was lucky enough to work with some of the greatest people in this sport, from the team at Lilywhite House and Hotspur Way to all the players and managers over the years.
“I wish to thank all the fans that have supported me over the years. It hasn’t always been an easy journey but significant progress has been made. I will continue to support this club passionately.”
Charrington said that Spurs are entering “a new era of leadership”, adding the club are “fully focused on stability” amid a year of upheaval. Vinai Venkatesham was hired as CEO in April, while Thomas Frank and Martin Ho became head coaches of the men’s and women’s teams respectively.
