Danny Rohl is out of the race to become the next Rangers manager after withdrawing from the selection process, according to journalist and transfer insider Ben Jacobs.

Rangers held talks with the former Sheffield Wednesday manager last week, but he feels it is not the right time for him to pursue his interest in the Ibrox job.

Rohl had emerged as the frontrunner to succeed Russell Martin after Steven Gerrard rejected a return to the club.

It was reported that the 36-year-old already had his backroom team lined up and was planning to include a former Rangers player in his crew to win over fans.

The Bears will now have to look elsewhere, and Rohl pulling out leaves Kevin Muscat as favourite to land the job.

Rangers have also spoken with former Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and former Mainz and Union Berlin manager Bo Svensson.

However, Svensson withdrew from the race over the weekend as he did not want to wait around for long due to the uncertainty over a timeline for a potential appointment.

Heart of Midlothian manager Derek McInnes has also insisted he has no plans of leaving his club after recent links with the Rangers job.

Rangers may need to pay a seven-figure compensation package to get Muscat to leave Chinese Super League leaders Shanghai Port.

There are four more games left in the Asian top-flight campaign and the Australian is expected to remain at the club until the end of their season.

Muscat appears keen on becoming the next Rangers manager and the Scottish Premiership club now have to find a way to reach an agreement with Shanghai Port.

Rangers under-19 boss Steven Smith and Brian Gilmour have been in charge of first team training since Martin was sacked and are expected to oversee the home league game against Dundee United on Saturday.
