Danny Rohl has been linked with taking over from Ruben Selles at Sheffield United

Sheffield United may have anticipated a bedding-in period for Ruben Selles after filling the vacancy left by Chris Wilder, but nobody could’ve predicted the nightmare start the Blades’ new boss has suffered.

The Steel City Side have lost their opening four Championship games; the first time they have achieved such a feat outside of the top-flight since the 1995/96 season. As a result, they sit bottom of the table and are the only team yet to score a point.

Performances have been uninspiring, and it is still hard to identify what system the Spaniard is looking to deploy at Bramall Lane. After pushing Leeds United and Burnley all the way in last season’s title fight, it already looks like a long shot for Sheffield United to battle for the play-offs this term.

Naturally, doubts over Selles’ future with the Blades have begun to swirl.

According to journalist Alan Nixon via his Patreon, United are already highlighting potential replacements for their current manager if results don’t improve.

Included within that list is former Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl, who exited Hillsborough on August 1. Nixon claims that, despite previously taking charge of the Owls, a move to Bramall Lane would not put the German off.

An immediate return to the second-tier would appeal greatly to Rohl, especially one that would see him in charge of an exciting project that has Premier League ambitions.

However, there would be one major sticking point he would have to get past first.

Danny Rohl would have to win over the Sheffield United supporters due to his Owls connections

Immediately, Rohl taking over at Sheffield United would likely spark debate among both Steel City side's fanbases.

Some of the Blades faithful would relish the opportunity to appoint a manager who was previously loved and idolised by their city rivals. It would provide ultimate bragging rights and make for a brilliant atmosphere when the two sides meet on November 23.

However, there may be a portion of Sheffield United’s fanbase who would be completely opposed to seeing someone who has represented the blue side of their city in the home dugout at Bramall Lane.

Rohl completely unified the Wednesday fanbase during the early stages of his time at Hillsborough and was celebrated regularly on the terraces.

Although this relationship eventually soured, it will still frustrate some of the Blades’ loyal to see Rohl cross the divide and take charge of their beloved team.

Therefore, the German boss has a real task on his hands. He would have to get the Sheffield United supporters on his side, or would be under increased pressure to perform immediately.

Although a move to Sheffield United would be extremely controversial, Rohl has proven capable of quickly getting supporters on his side in the past.

When he walked into the Wednesday dressing room, the club were on their knees after failing to win once in their first 10 league games of the 2023/24 Championship campaign.

The German boss quickly managed to turn the negative atmosphere at Hillsborough into a positive one and ultimately kept the Owls up.

Whilst not quite as severe, Sheffield United now find themselves bottom of the second-tier after the first international break and will need a similar sort of impact if Selles is dismissed.

If Rohl can take over the Blades and produce similar results to what he did with their city rivals, supporters at Bramall Lane will quickly forget his previous allegiances.
