Danny Simpson has returned to the professional game by joining UAE second division side Arabian Falcons as a player-coach under manager Jonjo Shelvey.
According to LeicesterMercury.co.uk, the former Leicester City right-back will combine playing duties with a role on Shelvey’s staff, joining a set-up where Ravel Morrison is captain and Jason Puncheon is co-owner and head of football operations.
Simpson was part of Leicester’s 2016 Premier League title triumph and made 133 appearances for the club between 2014 and 2019. He played more than 400 senior games and also featured for Manchester United, Sunderland, Newcastle United, Queens Park Rangers, Huddersfield Town and Bristol City.
He announced his retirement in July 2024, nearly three years after his last professional appearance, then turned out for Wythenshawe AFC’s veterans and in small-sided tournaments. He now resumes his career after working on his coaching badges at Manchester United.
Simpson said the chance to link up with Shelvey on an ambitious project was too good to refuse, adding that he still has plenty to offer on the pitch. He wants to help the team follow a clear plan towards a promotion-winning campaign.
Shelvey welcomed the addition, citing Simpson’s experience, leadership and winning mentality as ideal for his first full season in charge. After stepping in for the final five games last term and narrowly missing promotion, he believes the club can build a squad capable of going up.
