Danny Welbeck has agreed a one-year contract extension with Brighton, keeping the 35-year-old at the club until 2027.
According to NY Times, the option in his deal due to expire this summer has been activated. He scored in consecutive league wins at Brentford 2-0 and at home to Nottingham Forest 2-1, taking him to 10 league goals in back-to-back seasons, a career best.
One more would make him only the third player to pass 10 goals in a Premier League campaign for the first time at 35 or older, after Gary McAllister for Coventry City in 1999-2000 and Zlatan Ibrahimovic for Manchester United in 2016-17.
The former Manchester United and England forward has scored 11 across all competitions and 48 in 191 Brighton appearances since joining from Watford in October 2020. He faces league leaders Arsenal, another of his former clubs, at the Amex Stadium on Wednesday night.
A seven-in-seven burst in September and October prompted calls for England coach Thomas Tuchel to consider recalling him before this summer’s World Cup.
Under head coach Fabian Hurzeler, Welbeck is part of a leadership group of experienced players. James Milner has started the last two games, breaking Gareth Barry’s Premier League appearances record by reaching 654 in the Brentford win. Brighton are 11th after a run of one win in 13 left them 14th.
