For Dante, his debut as coach of Bayern’s reserve team could hardly have gone more poorly. In the season opener of the Bavarian Regional League, the Munich team lost 0–1 to newly promoted SC Eltersdorf—and in front of prominent spectators, of all people.

Max Eberl and Vincent Kompany had come to watch the Brazilian’s debut in person on Friday evening. However, the sporting director and the head coach of the first team did not witness a successful start: Dante suffered a defeat right off the bat in his first official match on the bench.

For a long time, the Munich team struggled to find a way past the newly promoted side and remained too harmless in front of goal. Shortly before the end, Eltersdorf then ruthlessly punished the uninspired Bayern amateurs. Leon Benedict Sommer scored the decisive goal in the 87th minute for the visitors, who had played in the Bayernliga Nord just last season.

Four young players made their Regionalliga debuts

At least there were a few positive moments on the personnel front. With Rayan Moumouni, Jakob Horvath, Matteo Maric, and Chris Aaron Afanou, four young players took the field for the first time in the Bavarian Regional League. It was an important step for these talents, even if the result wasn’t what they hoped for.

For Dante himself, this new job marks the start of a new chapter. The center back had ended his playing career with OGC Nice over the summer and returned to FC Bayern, where he had previously played from 2012 to 2015. Now he is in charge of the German record champions’ second team.

However, the omens were already mixed even before the season opener. During preseason, Dante and Bayern II lost all four of their friendly matches—the defeat against Eltersdorf thus fits seamlessly into what has been a difficult run so far.

The chance for redemption comes quickly. Next week marks the first away game of the season: On Friday, July 31, the amateurs will face Wacker Burghausen at 7 p.m.
