Bought initially for £85m, the expectations on his shoulders were hefty to say the least and while the fans have firmly got behind him, the player has struggled to reward their generous support.

In 142 appearances, he has scored 40 goals, and while you could always commend him for his never give up attitude, things have turned a little more sour over the last few months.

As such, Liverpool are fighting a battle between selling the player elsewhere for a new start while trying to make sure that the financial loss on the overall saga remains at a reasonable level.

Reports coming from Spain are suggesting that an agreement is nigh for Nunez to leave but an agreement for the player to leave on satisfactory terms is still being hashed out behind the scenes.

"The footballer would be delighted" to move

According to Cadena Ser, an agreement on personal terms has been reached between Nunez and Atletico Madrid, with the player hoping to replace Antoine Griezmann as Diego Simeone's talisman.

The report writes: "With the Uuruguayan striker 'they have already spoken', and Miguel Martín Talavera reports for the microphones of 'El Larguero' that within the club 'they are clear that the footballer would be delighted to arrive at Atlético de Madrid'.

"After the conversations they have had with the Uruguayan striker, he can confirm that 'everything has been talked about with the footballer,' and also 'the footballer's OK to join Atlético de Madrid is also on the table', the only problem that exists is the negotiations with Liverpool.

"At the time, the English paid more than 80 million euros between fixed and variable to get the services of the Benfica striker at that time. In Liverpool 'they are not going to give him away'."

On the basis of this intel, we now have a little more clarity about Nunez's headspace. His last start was back in March when the Reds hosted Southampton at Anfield and since then, he has been left to make cameo appearances from the bench for the remainder of the season.
