Former goalkeeper Dave Watson has criticised Sunderland supporters who left early during the 5-0 home defeat to Nottingham Forest, saying they let themselves and the team down. Speaking on the Ben Foster podcast, he took aim at those who departed before the interval.

Sunderland began relatively steadily, but once Forest went ahead the contest quickly unravelled. By the 34th minute Régis Le Bris’ side trailed 3-0, and thousands left before half-time. Some even made it home in time to watch the second half on television.

“Do you know what [expletive] me off watching that game is that even though it’s a disaster for Sunderland, they’ve had an unbelievable season and at three and four nil the stadium were out,” he said.

“Honestly, for what they have done that team this year and yes, it was a very very bad night at the office, but them supporters let themselves and that team down on that night. The players let themselves down, let’s not have it wrong, but come on. What they have delivered this season has been unreal.”

Watson’s playing career was curtailed at 28 by a serious knee injury. He could not return to first-team football and retired in 2001. He also represented England at youth level.

He moved swiftly into coaching, building a strong reputation as a goalkeeping coach. His clubs included Northampton Town, Oldham Athletic, Huddersfield Town, Nottingham Forest and Birmingham City.
