Filipe Luis has been confirmed as AS Monaco’s new head coach on a two-year deal to June 2028, succeeding Sébastien Pocognoli.
He arrives with assistant Ivan Palanco and fitness coach Diogo Linhares. The rugged left back played 300-plus games for Atlético Madrid and one season at Chelsea, and won 44 Brazil caps.
“Filipe was a fine player and had a real ability to understand things. It was easy for him to become a coach, he already liked studying the game back then,” said David Luiz, speaking to Nice-Matin.
He began coaching Flamengo in September 2024. “At Flamengo there is a lot of pressure but he managed that because he had played there,” Luiz said.
Luis led Flamengo 100 times, recording 63 wins, 23 draws and 15 defeats, and won five trophies including the local championship and the 2025 Copa Libertadores. The club ended his tenure in March after a tougher start to the campaign.
“He can adapt very well to the league, it will depend on his ability to get his ideas across. He wants his side to keep the ball and press high,” Luiz added. His first matches are due in late August.
