David Moyes takes charge of his 750th Premier League match today as Everton visit former club West Ham. Everton sit 10th chasing Europe, West Ham are 17th, two points above relegation. According to NY Times, only Arsene Wenger and Sir Alex Ferguson have more.

He began in March 2002 with a 2-1 win over Fulham, swiftly steadying Everton. Tipped to struggle in 2004-05, they finished fourth after signing Marcus Bent and Tim Cahill, then lost to Villarreal in the next season’s Champions League qualifiers.

Moyes built shrewdly. Seamus Coleman cost £60,000 from Sligo Rovers, Phil Jagielka, Leighton Baines and Joleon Lescott arrived from the Championship, while Mikel Arteta and Steven Pienaar thrived at Goodison.

His Manchester United tenure lasted a little over nine months, ending with a 2-0 defeat at Goodison in April 2014, scored by Baines and Kevin Mirallas. He then oversaw Real Sociedad’s win against Barcelona in January 2015, departing that November.

After Sunderland’s 2017 relegation, he twice led West Ham. He kept them up, returned in December 2019, delivered three straight European campaigns and lifted the 2023 Conference League, with Declan Rice developing into a £100million captain before a £105million sale to Arsenal.

Moyes rejoined Everton in January 2025 under The Friedkin Group, lost his opener to Aston Villa, then four wins in five eased fears. This season he has them back in the European conversation, and says the players keep him energised to continue.
