David Villa has joined Atlético de Madrid’s board as the club reshaped its governance on Thursday. An 11-member board was confirmed at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, led by president Enrique Cerezo with Miguel Ángel Gil as chief executive.

The club said in a statement that Apollo Sports Capital is now the majority shareholder after an extraordinary general meeting approved a capital increase of up to 100 million euros. The statutes were amended to reflect the new shareholding structure.

The board comprises Cerezo, Gil, and directors Antoine Bonnier, Robert Givone, Tristram Leach, Jim Miller, Sam Porter, Amit Singh, Javier Valle, Antonio Vázquez-Guillén and David Villa. Pablo Jiménez de Parga continues as board secretary.

Villa, Spain’s record goalscorer, returns after playing in Atlético’s 2013/14 LaLiga title season, when the club also reached the Champions League final.

He said he is delighted to come back with new responsibilities, keen to help the club keep growing each season, and hopes to contribute to further success. He expressed gratitude for the appointment.

Cerezo welcomed him back, telling Villa this is his home and expressing confidence that his experience will strengthen Atlético.
