Davide Massa to referee Benfica v Real Madrid, Benfica have 50% wins under him | OneFootball

UEFA confirmed on Monday that Davide Massa, 44, will referee Benfica v Real Madrid in the Champions League, a choice that carries a mixed record for the hosts.

He will be assisted by Filippo Meli and Stefano Alassio, with Luca Pairetto as fourth official. Marco Di Bello is on VAR duty and Gianluca Aureliano is AVAR.

Benfica have played twice under the Italian. The first was a win in Belgium against Club Brugge in 2023, the second a 1-0 defeat to Bayern de Munique in 2024/25.

That leaves Benfica at 50% wins from two fixtures with Massa.

José Mourinho's side still hope to reach the play-off for the last 16 after defeat in the previous round. The match, the eighth and final game of the group stage, is on Wednesday 28 January at 20:00 at the Luz against Álvaro Arbeloa's team.
