Sunderland are believed to be closing in on Toulouse defender Dayann Methalie, with a move that would be their second signing of the summer.
RMC Sport reports that Methalie has agreed a long-term contract, with negotiations ongoing between Sunderland and Toulouse, and the transfer could be completed in the coming days. The outlet adds it would be a record sale for the Ligue 1 club, with the versatile defender valued at around £25m, and that he chose Sunderland amid interest from several sides including Newcastle United and Aston Villa.
Often listed as a left-back, Methalie has also featured as a left-sided centre-back, wing-back and winger. That flexibility would hand Regis Le Bris further options across the left.
Methalie has four France Under-21 caps but is yet to play for the senior side. He debuted in October alongside Leny Yoro and PSG’s Warren Zaine-Emery in a 6-0 win over the Faroe Islands, scoring twice. He has also represented Les Bleus at Under-20 and Under-18 level.
“It is flattering. One day, I will have to leave. I would like to play at the highest level. For now, I have to keep doing what I’m doing.” He told Telefoot towards the end of last season.
