Luis de la Fuente has named a 27-man Spain squad for March friendlies, selecting four goalkeepers for the first time by adding Joan Garcia to regulars Unai Simón, David Raya and Álex Remiro.
According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, first call-ups go to centre-back Cristhian Mosquera and wingers Ander Barrenetxea and Víctor Muñoz, while Carlos Soler returns after years away.
Dani Carvajal remains out given his limited minutes after two serious injuries. Captain Álvaro Morata is also omitted, having not started for his club since November, and now appears short of World Cup chances. Dani Vivian, Aleix García and Robin Le Normand are absent too.
The group assemble on Monday at Las Rozas for this window. Spain play Serbia at La Cerámica on Friday 27 March and Egypt at the RCDE Stadium on Tuesday 31 March, after conflict in Iran forced the cancellation of a Qatar mini-tour that included a scrapped Finalissima against Argentina.
Injuries have ruled out Fabián Ruiz, Mikel Merino and Nico Williams. Pablo Barrios is not yet ready, and Samu Aghehowa is sidelined after rupturing his cruciate about six weeks ago. Marc Pubill, carrying a knock, misses what would have been his first call-up.
De la Fuente’s next list will be for the World Cup. It is very possible he again names more than the 26 allowed before making cuts, especially if several are due to play the Champions League final on 31 May. Iraq on four June in Riazor and Peru on eight June in Puebla, Mexico, are set to be the last tests.
