Decision day arrives for the man at the centre of Spygate | OneFootball

Tonda Eckert faces an FA deadline today to state how he will answer three Spygate-related charges.

According to Sainstmarching.com, the FA set out its Rule E3.1 case last week, alleging he directed or observed opposition training before meetings with Oxford United, Ipswich Town and Middlesbrough during the second half of last season.

He can contest the charges, triggering a disciplinary hearing before any punishment, or accept them and go straight to sanction before an FA Regulatory Commission.

Back in June he issued a full apology and accepted responsibility, which makes a drawn-out fight appear unlikely, though nothing is decided.

Precedent offers little guidance. Older E3.1 breaches often brought fines and touchline bans, while Marcelo Bielsa received a formal warning in 2019 and no FA charge.

Southampton’s hierarchy remain supportive. Owner Dragan Solak has publicly backed Eckert and the club say they will cooperate with the FA, with promotion still the aim.

The squad are understood to be behind him too.

The club have already felt consequences, having been thrown out of the Championship play-off final in May. They will begin 2026/27 on minus four points.

Today marks a procedural step rather than the verdict, with any punishment to follow once Eckert files his response.
