Decisive figure from defence sets tone for Southampton at Preston | OneFootball

Taylor Harwood-Bellis headed Southampton in front in the 12th minute to spark a 3-1 win at Preston North End.

From a set piece he attacked the delivery superbly, rising to glance in Welington's cross (12.). The centre-back's timing and leap gave the visitors instant control and quietened Deepdale.

After the restart he kept Saints organised, winning duels and clearing danger as pressure mounted. Even when Preston replied (60.), Harwood-Bellis blocked space in the box and helped manage the game.

He finished with nine clearances and 47 accurate passes from 52, adding a goal with his only attempt. Those numbers underlined his command of the penalty area and calm distribution from the back.

It worked because Preston slung in 28 crosses and Saints' structure let him attack first balls and dominate second phases around the six-yard box.

Saints remain fourth in the Championship. Preston are 14th.
