Gyan de Regt settled it in the 90th minute with a left-footed finish, as Excelsior won 3-2 at Groningen. The forward's timing capped a busy display that constantly asked questions of the hosts.
The winner came from a rapid break, De Regt racing onto Arthur Zagre's pass and guiding his shot into the bottom right corner. It was the sharpest touch of a night where his movement repeatedly threatened the back line.
Early on he created Excelsior's first opening, slipping Noah Naujoks in to draw a low save from Etienne Vaessen. He soon after met an Emil Hansson cross but steered his effort wide from the centre.
After the restart he kept linking play and attacking space between centre-backs, finishing with two attempts, two key passes and four touches in the box that underlined his dual threat as runner and connector.
In the eighth minute of second half stoppage time he released Szymon Wlodarczyk for a driven shot that was saved, evidence that his pace and decision-making stretched Groningen to the end.
Excelsior climb from 15th to 14th and host Volendam next. Groningen drop from ninth to 10th and host NEC Nijmegen next.
