England struck inside the third minute of the World Cup third-place play-off, Declan Rice rifling in from distance on Saturday.
L'Équipe notes France were still smarting from their semi-final defeat by Spain. That match finished 0-2.
The opener stemmed from an avoidable turnover by Désiré Doué, his pass from his own half towards Rayan Cherki picked off centrally by Rice.
The Arsenal midfielder then hit a clean right-foot shot from outside the area, which flew into Mike Maignan’s side-netting.
The goalkeeper was helpless as the ball zipped in, and France trailed before they had settled.
