Liverpool find themselves in a delicate position with Ibrahima Konate as contract discussions remain unresolved. The French defender has entered the final year of his deal, placing the club under pressure to secure his future before January, when he could agree a pre-contract with another side. Negotiations have not progressed as hoped, and with interest from abroad, Liverpool’s hierarchy are acutely aware of the ticking clock.
The club’s intention is clear: extend his stay at Anfield. But as things stand, Liverpool must consider the possibility that one of their most talented defenders could leave without the security of a long-term agreement.
Alongside the contractual uncertainty, Konate’s early-season form has been inconsistent. Comparisons to Virgil van Dijk are inevitable, but fitness issues have played a role in preventing him from finding rhythm. Concerns heightened when France manager Didier Deschamps suggested there were fitness doubts, but those were eased during the recent international break.
Konate completed 90 minutes against Ukraine, registering three clearances—including one off the line—two interceptions, one tackle and four duels won. It was a display that reminded Liverpool of his qualities and reassured supporters that his physical condition is improving. Cramp issues that surfaced previously now appear to be behind him.

Arne Slot will have been encouraged by Konate’s performance for France, which could serve as a springboard for his Liverpool campaign. When fully fit, the 26-year-old provides pace, strength and anticipation that allow the Reds to defend higher up the pitch.
There has been debate among supporters and pundits alike about his role alongside Van Dijk. While the Dutchman remains the defensive leader, Konate offers a complementary skill set rather than a mirror image. Dismissing him as merely a partner to the captain underestimates his potential to anchor Liverpool’s backline for years to come.
This is why speculation about summer interest in Marc Guehi carried weight. Liverpool recognise that if a defender of Konate’s calibre departs, only another player of similar quality can replace him. The club are not prepared to let their standards slip in such a key area.
The weeks ahead could prove decisive. Liverpool want stability, but Konate’s representatives will weigh up all options. Performances on the pitch will play a part too, with consistent displays strengthening his bargaining position.
For now, Liverpool supporters can take encouragement from his showing for France. It was a reminder that, at his best, Konate is integral to Liverpool’s defensive structure. Whether that future remains at Anfield, however, will depend on how swiftly progress is made at the negotiating table.
