Liverpool Summer Transfer Priorities: Tsimikas, Konate Exit and Centre-Back Cover Under the Spotlight

Wide Attackers Top Liverpool’s Recruitment List

Liverpool’s summer transfer strategy is beginning to take shape and the clearest message emerging from Merseyside is that attacking reinforcements are at the top of the agenda.

According to reporting from James Pearce, the club’s priority is strengthening the wide forward positions. That need has become increasingly urgent following the end of Mohamed Salah’s remarkable Liverpool career, leaving a sizeable gap in both output and leadership within the attacking unit.

Pearce reported: “The priority is buying wide attackers. There is a big void to fill in the squad after the end of Mohamed Salah’s record-breaking Liverpool career.”

That challenge has been compounded by further uncertainty in the forward line. Federico Chiesa is expected to move on this summer, while leading scorer Hugo Ekitike faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering an Achilles injury that is likely to keep him out until at least the middle of next season.

Liverpool’s recruitment team have built a reputation for planning ahead rather than reacting to crises. However, replacing the influence and production of Salah is no ordinary task. The club will be looking for players capable of stretching defences, creating chances and contributing goals on a consistent basis.

Midfield Concerns Demand Attention

While the attack represents the most pressing concern, Liverpool’s midfield department is also expected to receive significant attention during the transfer window.

The Reds were repeatedly overpowered in central areas throughout the 2025-26 campaign, an issue that became increasingly apparent against physically dominant opponents. Improving the balance, energy and control of the midfield is therefore viewed as another major objective.

Pearce highlighted this concern, noting that Liverpool “will look to bolster their midfield department after being repeatedly outfought in that area in 2025-26.”

It is a revealing assessment. Liverpool’s best teams have traditionally been built on intensity, athleticism and the ability to dominate transitions. When those qualities fade, the impact is often felt throughout the side. Reinforcements in midfield could therefore prove almost as important as additions in attack.

There is also uncertainty at right-back. Conor Bradley continues his recovery from a serious knee injury, meaning Liverpool must assess whether they have sufficient depth in that area heading into a demanding campaign that will include domestic and European commitments.

Tsimikas Set for Important Supporting Role

One position that appears lower down Liverpool’s list of priorities is left-back.

Despite the expected departure of Andy Robertson, the club are not currently planning to enter the market for a direct replacement. Instead, Kostas Tsimikas is expected to remain an important part of the squad and provide experienced cover.

Pearce reported: “Andy Robertson’s departure isn’t expected to lead to Liverpool buying a left-back, with Kostas Tsimikas set to provide cover for Milos Kerkez after his return from a loan spell at Roma.”

That places Tsimikas in a significant supporting role. The Greek international has often been overshadowed during his time at Anfield but has consistently demonstrated reliability when called upon. His experience, professionalism and familiarity with the demands of the club make him a valuable squad option.

With Milos Kerkez expected to take on greater responsibility, Tsimikas offers continuity and depth without Liverpool needing to commit additional transfer funds to the position.

Centre-Back Cover Question After Konate Exit

Perhaps the most intriguing decision facing Liverpool concerns their defensive depth following the departure of Ibrahima Konate.

Losing a player of Konate’s calibre as a free agent naturally raises questions about centre-back cover. Yet Liverpool’s current stance suggests there is no immediate sense of panic.

Pearce explained: “Liverpool also have to weigh up whether they have sufficient centre-back cover following the exit of Ibrahima Konate as a free agent.”

The current defensive group includes captain Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Giovanni Leoni and new arrival Jeremy Jacquet. While there is undeniable quality within that group, the debate around centre-back cover is unlikely to disappear any time soon.

Pearce added that “club sources currently stress that they have bigger priorities to address.”

That perspective offers an insight into Liverpool’s thinking. While centre-back cover remains under review, the club believe the more urgent issues lie elsewhere. Strengthening the attack and midfield is expected to take precedence before any further decisions are made regarding the defensive unit.

Even so, the departure of Konate leaves a notable vacancy in terms of experience and physical presence. Liverpool may feel comfortable with their options today, but the demands of a long season can quickly alter recruitment plans. As things stand, however, Tsimikas, midfield reinforcements and attacking additions appear more likely to dominate the summer agenda than another move for a central defender.
