PSG and Chelsea could be paired in the Champions League last 16 on Friday. L'Équipe notes they have met nine times since 2004, eight in Europe and once in last July’s Club World Cup final. Since QSI arrived in 2011, Chelsea have been PSG’s fourth most frequent opponent internationally.

The first meeting in 2004 set the tone, PSG 0-3 Chelsea at the Parc des Princes. José Mourinho and Didier Drogba had just arrived, Chelsea would win the Premier League conceding only 15. Drogba scored twice as Vahid Halilhodzic’s side began a season that ended ninth.

In 2014, PSG took a 3-1 first leg lead to Stamford Bridge without the injured Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Laurent Blanc’s team sat back, lacked edge and were punished by substitutes André Schürrle on 32 minutes and Demba Ba on 87. Blanc later said Chelsea’s experience told.

A year on came the turnaround, Chelsea 2-2 PSG after extra time. Level at 1-1 from the first leg, David Luiz headed an 86th-minute equaliser. In extra time, PSG, down to 10 after Ibrahimovic’s 31st-minute red, trailed to Eden Hazard’s 96th-minute penalty before Thiago Silva’s 114th-minute header from a Thiago Motta corner sent them through, moments still cherished in the QSI era.

By 2016 the balance had swung. After a 2-1 win in Paris, PSG repeated the score at Stamford Bridge, Adrien Rabiot on 16 minutes and Ibrahimovic on 67 sealing progress against Guus Hiddink’s fading Blues. Blanc said he was struck by his team’s control away from home.

The most recent chapter was Chelsea 3-0 PSG in the Club World Cup final on 13 July 2025 in New Jersey. Favourites a month and a half after overpowering Inter in the Champions League final, Luis Enrique’s side looked weary and were smothered by Enzo Maresca’s press. Cole Palmer delivered an assist and two goals, then took player of the tournament.
