Dennis Cirkin has undergone surgery on a long-standing wrist issue, sharing images from hospital.

The Sunderland defender posted from his hospital bed with his arm in a sling and wrote "Metal out, on the mend #wristtape4life."

The 24-year-old was on the bench for the final-day win over Chelsea at the Stadium of Light. That result delivered European football for the first time since 1973-74. The wrist problem has persisted since last season in the Championship, during which he wore protection.

Injuries limited him to just eight Premier League appearances as Sunderland finished seventh and booked a Europa League place. He remains a fans' favourite after helping the club climb from League One to the top flight.

He joined from Tottenham Hotspur in 2021 and was part of Alex Neil's side that won promotion from League One.

His future is uncertain this summer, with his contract situation one to watch as Sunderland prepare for a campaign in both the Premier League and Europa League.
