Ex-Uruguay national team head coach Marcelo Bielsa has this week spoken out on the claims of problems between he and Real Madrid star Federico Valverde.
In a group featuring minnows Saudi Arabia and Cabo Verde in North America, the Celeste managed to piece together a dismal haul of just two points.
The two-time winners of the tournament were in turn sent packing from the World Cup at the group stage.
In their final outing, against Spain this past weekend, the aforementioned Marcelo Bielsa turned heads with his personnel calls. One in particular, the withdrawal of star man Fede Valverde early in the 2nd-half, came as nothing short of a shock.
The Real Madrid man departed the pitch looking bemused, with the change having ultimately failed to have the desired effect.
Amid ongoing speculation surrounding a potential falling out between he and the engine room star, Bielsa was therefore drawn on his relationship with Valverde during an exchange with the media on Wednesday.
The tactician, though, after departing his role as Uruguay boss, was quick to assure:
“I never had any problems with Valverde. I’ve never made more concessions than I did for Valverde, because he deserves it.”
