In a beIN Sports documentary marking Guy Stéphan’s final major tournament with France, the assistant reads a heartfelt letter from Didier Deschamps.
The pair have been on the France bench since 2012, having first joined forces at Marseille in 2009. Their time at OM brought one Ligue 1 title, three League Cups and two Trophées des Champions, before an early exit amid poor league results.
Deschamps reflects on a partnership so intuitive that words are often unnecessary, with understanding frequently coming from a glance. He praises Stéphan’s steadfast convictions in difficult moments. He also describes appointing him as assistant as one of the best decisions of his career.
He writes that working alongside Stéphan has been a privilege and an honour, and that the journey is not finished. In the United States, he adds, Stéphan will do everything to pursue the objective they share. He points to family as a point of balance and suggests they were simply made to get along.
Stéphan is visibly moved after reading the letter, admitting he rarely shows his feelings and needs to wipe away tears. The World Cup final is scheduled for 19 July.
