France’s attacking prowess was on full display in the 3-1 win over Colombia on Sunday night. Cameras panned away to an attacking trio of Kylian Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé, and Michael Olise laughing and joking on the bench, all the while, on the pitch, Désiré Doué, Maghnes Akliouche, Rayan Cherki, Maghnes Akliouche, and Marcus Thuram went about dismantling the Colombia defence.
With Liverpool’s Hugo Ekitiké on the bench and with Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola absent due to injury, the strength in depth of this France side was clear to see.
And post-match, PSG and France defender Lucas Hernandez was not shy to boast about it. “We have the best attack in the world,” he told L’Équipe in his interview. However, those words were clearly not appreciated by Didier Deschamps, who responded during his post-match media duties.
“Lucas said that? I will talk to him right after. I have ambition, and I want the players to have it, too, but I don’t want us to lose our humility,” said Deschamps, who is preparing to go into his final major tournament as manager of Les Bleus, and who is very aware of the expectations going into next summer’s competition, set to be held in North America.
He added, “We will need everything to be stronger than the others. I won’t hide and say that we aren’t one of the teams that can be world champions, but there are between eight and ten teams that can say that. It’s not by shouting “We’re the best, we’re the strongest” from the rooftops… by experience, it isn’t when a French sportsman is feeling comfortable that they are better.”
