Didier Deschamps refused to engage with Christophe Dugarry’s latest broadside, sharpening the long-running rift between the former France team-mates, according to L'Équipe.

Asked about Dugarry’s comments, the France head coach cut in with “Next”. He then said he did not share the same references and that, whether from a journalist or a former player, people can say what they want, but reporters should not act as the after-sales service, as that is not his role.

Dugarry had railed that France’s loss to Spain was not merely a defeat or elimination but a humiliation. He said he felt cheated and argued Deschamps had won one competition out of six, calling the overall picture a bluff and expressing deep anger.

After a separate question, Deschamps turned back to the reporter who had raised the subject and asked why the media do not seek out positive views instead of highlighting such remarks. He finished with irony, noting that many would be delighted to hear the relationship is perfect.

Deschamps appeared torn between shutting the exchange down and extending it, but he ultimately declined to go further and moved on.
