According to Sunderland Echo, Diego Costa is set to appear at the Stadium of Light on Monday as part of the Wearside Legends Game.
The former Chelsea, Atletico Madrid and Spain striker has been named in Team Ronaldinho for Ronaldinho & Friends v Defoe & UK Icons, with kick-off at five pm on 25 May.
Sunderland announced earlier this year that Ronaldinho would headline on Wearside, with Jermain Defoe to lead the UK Icons. The fixture is scheduled one day after Sunderland’s final Premier League match against Chelsea.
Owners Kyril Louis-Dreyfus and Juan Sartori, along with director of football Florent Ghisolfi, are also set to be involved in the showpiece.
Costa, 37, won two Premier League titles and the League Cup with Chelsea, and major honours with Atletico Madrid including La Liga, the Europa League and the UEFA Super Cup.
Ronaldinho’s squad already features Gilberto Silva, Maicon, Douglas Costa, Philippe Coutinho, Ramires, Kleberson and Nwankwo Kanu, plus former Sunderland striker Djibril Cisse and ex-loanee Nicklas Bendtner.
Defoe’s UK Icons include Kevin Phillips, Steven Fletcher, Lee Cattermole, Phil Bardsley, Danny Collins and Pascal Chimbonda, alongside Heurelho Gomes, Michael Dawson, Jermaine Pennant, Aaron Lennon, Sandro and Shaun Wright-Phillips.
The event promises a heavy dose of nostalgia, with Ronaldinho widely cherished as one of the game’s great entertainers. He won the Ballon d’Or in 2005 and lifted the World Cup in 2002.
