Goalkeeper Diego Fuoli sparked a political chant during Sabadell’s promotion celebrations, rousing supporters from the town hall balcony at the close of his speech.
According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, the city turned out on Saturday to mark a return to professional football sealed against Zamora on Friday, with a parade from Nova Creu Alta to the city hall and mayor Marta Farrés greeting the squad before balcony addresses.
Fuoli, who came through Villarreal’s academy between 2016 and 2020, spoke for around two minutes. Repeated chants urged him to stay. He said he had not expected such a year, praised the welcome, and hinted at scores to settle that he would not air.
He appeared to aim a barb at Eldense, promoted automatically from Group 2 while Sabadell went up via the play-offs after a tight, controversial finish, and the square erupted into an obscene chant against the rival.
He also referenced comments from Zamora about Joan Soteras, Sabadell’s former president, now head of the Catalan federation and a vice president of the Spanish federation, being sporting director Lucas Viale’s father-in-law. With clear irony, he thanked Soteras, noting there was no favour when Sabadell dropped five years ago to the third tier and again in 2024 to Segunda RFEF.
In a city hall with a PSC majority, he then set up the crowd by saying the name Pedro Sánchez, and the square answered almost in unison with an insult at the prime minister that has become commonplace.
