The ball used when Diego Maradona scored his Hand of God goal has sold for $3,355,000, about €2.8m, fees included, in a US auction on Saturday.

Maradona struck twice in Argentina’s 2-1 quarter-final win over England on 22 June 1986 at the Estadio Azteca, the first with his hand. According to L'Équipe, Tunisian referee Ali Bennaceur collected the ball after the match and it has since changed hands.

He consigned it to a London auction in November 2022 via Graham Budd Auctions, realising £2m, about €2.3m. The new owner has now put it back up for sale.

American auction house Heritage Auction in Dallas, Texas ran the auction, which began online at $2.5m. Its specialists had valued the ball at $10m, more than €8.5m.

In the same event, Muhammad Ali’s robe, worn during his world title victory over Joe Frazier in October 1975, went for $549,000, about €470,000. US memorabilia sales prize watertight provenance, which applied to both items.
