‘Difficult’ for Manchester United to fund £65m January deal

Manchester United would find it ‘difficult’ to fund a £65m deal for Antoine Semenyo in January, despite interest in the Bournemouth winger.

Semenyo was a player of interest to Manchester United in the summer, though Bournemouth agreed a new deal with the 25-year-old to end speculation over an exit.

That deal, however, includes a £65m release clause and Semenyo’s performances in the Premier League this season have increased interest in his services. He’s scored six goals in 11 games, adding three assists. Only Erling Haaland and Igor Thiago have scored more Premier League goals in 2025/26 so far.

United view Semenyo as an ideal fit for their game-plan under Ruben Amorim. A powerful ball-carrier with goal threat and athleticism, he mirrors the profile of player targeted in the summer.

However, The Athletic are reporting that Manchester United’s summer spend, in excess of £200m on attackers including Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Sesko and Bryan Mbeumo, makes finding funds for the new year difficult.

Their financial situation could open the door for Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur, who are both interested. Semenyo’s release clause is available for only a period of the January window, while the fee drops further at the end of the campaign.

Despite representing Ghana at international level, a mid-season move is not problematic, with the African nation having failed to qualify for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations.
