According to L'Équipe, Réunion-born Dimitri Payet announced his retirement at half-time of OM v Lille on Sunday. The ex-Nantes, Saint-Étienne, Lille, West Ham, Marseille and Vasco da Gama playmaker scored 150-plus goals.
On 13 March 2016 he bent a 30-metre free-kick in off the post at Old Trafford as West Ham drew 1-1 with Manchester United in the FA Cup, then on 2 April curled another into the top corner against Crystal Palace.
France’s 2016 warm-up with Cameroon brought a 90th-minute Payet free-kick to seal a 3-2 win. On 10 June he assisted Olivier Giroud and, at 1-1, smashed an 89th-minute left-foot winner past Anton Ciprian Tatarusanu against Romania, leaving in tears and making Euro 2016’s team with 3 goals and 2 assists.
In 2016-17 he slalomed past Middlesbrough defenders before drilling a low equaliser for 1-1.
On 12 April 2018 he tormented RB Leipzig, supplying an assist and rifling an outside-of-the-boot finish into the top corner after a stepover past Stefan Ilsanker in a 5-2 win. Marseille reached the Europa League final, losing 0-3 to Atlético Madrid.
In 2018-19 against Guingamp, he met a clearance first time to lob Karl-Johan Johnsson via the bar in a 4-0 victory. On 10 November 2019 he launched and finished a move to beat Anthony Lopes as Marseille edged Lyon 2-1, his brace deciding the Olympico.
On 7 April 2022 he then smashed a half-volley under the bar against PAOK from a Cengiz Ünder routine, a strike later voted the Conference League’s goal of the season.
