Diogo Costa marked Porto’s Supertaça triumph with a social media tribute to his late grandfather, Joaquim Meireles. The player said in a post that the trophy was dedicated to him.

Porto beat Torreense 1-0 on Saturday to win the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira. Costa shared his message on Sunday.

He wrote that he had long wanted to live this moment to honour Joaquim Meireles, known in the family as avô Ginho. He recalled his grandfather’s pride in every step of his Porto career and his deep love for the club.

Costa thanked his family, team-mates, club staff and supporters for their messages, affection and support during a difficult and emotional week. He said that backing made all the difference, and that this victory will always be tied to his grandfather’s memory.

After the final whistle he was embraced by team-mates and staff, a scene many interpreted as a farewell. Head coach Francesco Farioli rejected that notion in his post-match press conference.
