‘Disappointing’ Barcelona star heavily criticised for latest international performance | OneFootball

A member of the midfield ranks at La Liga giants Barcelona has this week come in for a round of heavy criticism on the part of a fellow countryman.

The player in question? Frenkie de Jong.

Barca standout De Jong was for his part back in from the off on the international front once more this past weekend.

This came as the Netherlands welcomed Finland to Amsterdam for a World Cup qualifier.

And en route to a 4-0 rout, the former Ajax man enjoyed a solid showing from his berth in the middle of the park, controlling proceedings with trademark quality and poise.

One individual, however, who was nevertheless left altogether unimpressed by De Jong’s showing was fellow Dutchman Marco van Basten.

Speaking during an appearance on ‘Ziggo Sport’, as cited by Mundo Deportivo, once-prolific striker Van Basten singled the 28-year-old out for harsh criticism:

“We expected Frenkie to speed up the game, but he didn’t. I found that disappointing. It was similar to postman football. De Jong’s role is to move the ball quickly from back to front, but he barely did that. It’s a shame because he has the vision and qualities to do it. Pedri plays faster and takes more risks in attack; that’s what you expect from Frenkie.”
