Dominic Calvert-Lewin omitted from England World Cup squad as Watkins and Toney selected | OneFootball

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been left out of Thomas Tuchel’s 26-man England squad for this summer’s World Cup, his omission confirmed this morning. The Leeds United striker scored 15 this season, 14 in the Premier League.

Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins and, more unexpectedly, Ivan Toney, now at Saudi club Al-Ahli and not capped since last June, are Harry Kane’s deputies. According to Leeds Live, Calvert-Lewin learned on Thursday, before evening leaks, that he would not travel to North America.

The 29-year-old earned his first England cap in nearly five years as a March substitute against Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay, then left camp early as planned. He had targeted the World Cup all season and felt that call-up gave him the external validation he sought. He finished with 14 Premier League goals, more than any other English player.

Tuchel has also made bold calls by omitting Cole Palmer, Phil Foden and Harry Maguire, with Trent Alexander-Arnold left out too.

Leeds midfielder Anton Stach has missed Germany’s squad, a decision not tied to his ankle recovery, which should take two to three weeks. He was stretchered off in Sunday’s 1-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion with a bloodied ankle, later seen in a protective boot for what is a deep cut needing stitches.

Stach received his first Germany call-up in four years in March, playing 10 minutes against Noah Okafor’s Switzerland before remaining on the bench versus Ghana. Okafor will go to the World Cup, joining Gabriel Gudmundsson of Sweden and Ao Tanaka of Japan, while Brenden Aaronson is expected to make the USA squad for a home tournament.
