Liverpool could face a Dominik Szoboszlai bombshell shortly. The Reds' midfielder was arguably their star player last season.
Dominik Szoboszlai had a brilliant season last term - so what a shame for him that it came in such a disappointing campaign. The Hungarian may have hit remarkable heights if his teammates had managed to keep up with him.
Szoboszlai essentially played four positions across the season. He was a midfielder, a no.10, a right-back and a winger - genuinely incredible versatility from an elite player.
Now we just need him to stick around. Szoboszlai has a contract running through 2028, so while there isn't any great need to sign one right here and now, things could escalate quickly. Liverpool won't want to go into 2027 with their midfielder having just one year remaining on his deal.
That would almost certainly necessitate finding a sale, given Szoboszlai's age and value. But then Liverpool have seen over the last two seasons that players are happy to run down their contracts if need be.
There is a risk of that with Szoboszlai, or at least him wanting to move on while the Reds are open to a sale. It's why there's a potential bombshell here, as the Athletic make it clear that Liverpool have failed to find a breakthrough in talks with him.
That's potentially very, very bad. Liverpool tied up talks with Ryan Gravenberch quite quickly, though were entirely unable to agree a deal with Ibrahima Konate.
Curtis Jones is another where there's been no breakthrough, nor have we seen any sort of progress with Alexis Mac Allister. Jones has just one year on his deal, while Mac Allister is in the same boat as Szoboszlai.
Getting a new deal with Szoboszlai is one of the first things on the agenda right now. It will remain that way post-Richard Hughes if he can't find terms.
And completely failing here would feel like a true disaster. Szoboszlai proved last season that he's one of those players who can deliver even when everyone else is struggling - and you want those players.
You certainly don't want to lose them on the cheap, let alone for nothing. But Liverpool continue to head in that direction, and the massive bombshell that comes with it.
