Doncaster Rovers have adjusted to life back in Sky Bet League One well, with one simple exception. Toyosi Olusanya could fix that.
Doncaster Rovers have adjusted to life back in Sky Bet League One well, with one simple exception.
They lacked a striker firing on all cylinders.
Captain Owen Bailey has popped up with a handful of goals from midfield and right-back, while summer recruit Brandon Hanlan’s only contribution has come in the EFL Trophy against Everton under-21s. Veteran Billy Sharp netted in a 1-1 draw with Wycombe Wanderers, marking his sole goal involvement in league action.
Joe Ironside, who lacked an opportunity to impress with Rovers back in the third tier, was shipped off to Tranmere Rovers on deadline day, but in his place is a signing who brings with him true potential.
The 27-year-old frontman, Toyosi Olusayna, put pen to paper in the hours following Doncaster’s South Yorkshire derby win over rivals Rotherham United, adding a very different prospect to Grant McCann’s attacking options.
The loanee, who has secured a move until January from Major League Soccer outfit Houston Dynamo, has electric pace. His strengths lie with getting through the channels, popping up behind the opposition’s defensive line.
Last season, he found the net 12 times for St. Mirren. Eight of those came in the Scottish Premiership, with two UEFA Conference League contributions alongside his cup exploits.
Across a 38-appearance campaign, Olusayna caught the eye and made his presence known through a vibrant skillset honed with stints in non-league after advancing through the AFC Wimbledon academy.
He has yet to make a starting 11 in the United States, with his loan move to Doncaster providing a chance to stamp his authority and hit good form before returning to Houston.
For Rovers, it provides a massive opportunity too.
Rob Street excelled in the second-half of Doncaster’s title-winning League Two campaign, netting 12 times across 24 games. Now back at Lincoln City, and firmly part of Michael Skubala’s plans at the LNER Stadium, Rovers have had to look afar for their replacement to Street’s pace, dynamism, and ability to spook defenders.
His strengths molded the entire style of play that Doncaster exuded on their charge to the fourth tier crown last term.
Now, with the promise Olusayna brings, there is a chance to emulate the success had with Street leading the line.
Doncaster’s only fault so far this term, as they sit in the lofty heights of the play-off places after the opening set of games, has been a lack of a consistently dangerous attacker. It can be said, a 39-year-old Sharp has struggled against much bigger defenders.
Meanwhile, Hanlan has failed to mark his territory in the limited appearances he has been afforded. He has looked impressive in short bursts, but may find himself behind Olusayna in the queue for gametime in the months.
The test for McCann is sustaining the positive start his side has made, and their late transfer window addition may go some way in mitigating any possible slide down the table.
Olusayna has all the tools to succeed between now and January. Whether he has the ability to be another Rob Street for Rovers is yet to be seen, but if he does, Doncaster are in for a positive campaign.
