Gary O’Neil is quietly going about his business at Strasbourg in really impressive fashion, with tonight a huge test.

Part of what was so frustrating about the way that Chelsea took Liam Rosenior from their sister club – and then sacked him a few months later – was that the talented young coach was lost from the BlueCo system forever.

He had done a great job in Ligue 1, and it was going to be hard to replace him. The choice of Gary O’Neil was hardly a glamorous one, but the former Wolves coach has done really well, and there’s an interesting piece in the Athletic today about how he’s getting on, as the Alsatians prepare for their Conference League semi final tonight.

“He arrived in a challenging environment but has done well,” they quote local journalist Dorian Faucherand as saying.

“The team’s performance in Ligue 1 has been disappointing, but Racing doesn’t have the roster to compete on three fronts.”

Strasbourg have now been dumped out of the Coupe de France after an impressive run, and have made it to their European semis. Beat Rayo Vallecano over two legs and they will reach the final with a really good season under their belt.
