It is the second time he has claimed the prize, having previously won it in 2021.

Earlier in the evening, Donnarumma's new team-mate Erling Haaland placed 26th in the Ballon d'Or ranking following his fifth successive year as a nominee.

The success adds to a spectacular CV, with a litany of personal and team honours so far in a decade of senior football at the highest level.

Our new No.25 won this vote from a chosen panel of journalists after an imperious 2024/25 campaign with PSG, playing a key role in their European Treble.

The 26-year-old truly took centre stage during the French side’s magnificent run to Champions League glory.

He kept five clean sheets in nine knockout matches, including a Man of the Match performance in the decisive Round of 16 second leg win against Liverpool.

Our new goalkeeper was then included the 2024/25 Champions League Team of the Season off the back of those showings.

On the international stage, Donnarumma has been Italy’s captain since Euro 2024 and incredibly already boasts 76 caps.

Speaking on his latest award, Donnarumma said: “It’s a great honour to win the Yashin Trophy for a second time in my career.

“It’s a team game but this is a personal award that all goalkeepers want to get their hands on so I’m delighted to have been selected by the panel.

“There are a lot of brilliant goalkeepers around the world, so this is incredibly special to me.

“I am pleased with my performances over the last year and the trophies I have won, but I know I can still improve and that’s a major reason why I chose to move to Manchester City.

“I am now fully focused on working with Pep Guardiola and his staff to develop my game even further and helping my new team to even more success.”

In total, Donnarumma has won 12 major trophies with AC Milan, PSG and Italy.

On a personal level, he was named the EURO 2020 Player of the Tournament and included in the FIFPRO World11 and as the Yashin Trophy winner for his exploits that year.

He has also been recognised as the outstanding stopper in Serie A and Ligue 1 twice each before this latest acclaim.

The Yashin Trophy was first introduced in 2019 and Donnarumma is only the second man to win it twice, after Aston Villa and Argentina’s Emiliano Martinez.

This award will also make Donnarumma the first Yashin Trophy winner to play for City, after Ederson made the top three on three occasions without ever coming out on top.

Everyone at Manchester City would like to congratulate Gianluigi on this exceptional achievement.
