An inspired Gianluigi Donnarumma performance was still not enough to take Italy to this summer’s World Cup as they suffered penalty shoot-out heartbreak against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Our goalkeeper and Italy’s captain put in a stellar display for his nation in Zenica as they played almost 80 minutes with 10 men.
He made 10 saves in open play but was powerless to stop the hosts winning 4-1 on spot kicks.
Moise Kean had put the Azzurri ahead 15 minutes in before a red card for Inter defender Alessandro Bastoni shortly before half-time saw them down a man.
Borussia Monchengladbach forward Haris Tabakovic eventually levelled up for Bosnia and Herzegovina with just over 10 minutes remaining, taking the game to extra time and then penalties.
They join Turkey, Sweden and Czechia in qualifying for the World Cup via Tuesday’s European play-off finals.
It also means Italy miss out on a third successive World Cup, having last appeared at the tournament in 2014.

At Wembley, Marc Guéhi became the 129th captain in the English national team’s history as Thomas Tuchel’s side went down 1-0 to Japan.
Brighton’s Kaoru Mitoma scored the only goal midway through the first half in England’s first ever defeat to an Asian country.
Phil Foden and Nico O’Reilly also registered an hour at the national stadium, nine days after the latter put in a Man of the Match performance there in the Carabao Cup final.

Meanwhile, Rayan Ait-Nouri played the full match as Algeria registered a 0-0 draw with Uruguay in Turin.
Omar Marmoush was involved for 85 minutes as Egypt drew 0-0 with Spain in Catalonia, while Rodri played the second half for the European champions.
Nathan Ake spent 77 minutes at left-back in Netherlands’ 1-1 meeting with Ecuador in Eindhoven, with the hosts down to 10 for much of the evening after Denzel Dumfries’ early red card. Tijjani Reijnders was an unused substitute.
Earlier in the day, Erling Haaland played 63 minutes for Norway in their goalless draw with Switzerland while Sverre Nypan couldn’t prevent the Under-21s from going down to a 2-0 defeat in Slovenia.
Those involved will now return to Manchester ahead of the resumption of the domestic schedule.
We’ve unveiled our plans for bars and hospitality spaces in the North Stand at the Etihad Stadium.
As previously communicated, the new North Stand concourses will feature large TV screens, upgraded sound systems, and self-service kiosks designed to create an amazing matchday experience.
