Former Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek has suffered a new major setback at Girona.

Van de Beek at United

Van de Beek joined United in the summer of 2020, to much fanfare and expectations. He arrived from Ajax, where he was a key member of their all-conquering squad, which included the likes of Matthijs de Ligt and Frenkie de Jong.

However, Van de Beek struggled to live up to his billing and to say his time at United was disappointing would be a massive understatement. He struggled for minutes under both Ole Gunnar Solskjær and Erik ten Hag. Injuries did not also help his cause.

During his time at Old Trafford, Van de Beek was loaned out to Everton and Eintracht Frankfurt. Neither loan spells really worked out.

He departed United in July 2024, having made just 62 appearances across all competitions. He scored two goals during that period, both of which came in the Premier League.

Van de Beek completed a permanent switch to Girona, where he enjoyed a revival by making 26 La Liga appearances in 2024/25. However, his progress was hampered by an injury which saw him miss the latter stages of the campaign.

He recently returned to action but Girona boss Michael Sanchez has confirmed that the Dutchman has suffered another major setback.

Van de Beek hit with fresh setback

The ex-United man played against Athletic Club Bilbao on Tuesday, featuring for 33 minutes as the two sides played out a 1-1 draw.

Sanchez spoke to Mundo Deportivo and confirmed that Van de Beek picked up another injury, which could be serious.

The Girona manager said, “It looks bad.”

“We’ll see after the tests, but it could be the worst news of the match.”

Mundo Deportivo claim that Van de Beek has a “serious injury to his Achilles.” Hopefully, he recovers well and comes back as soon as possible.
