Manchester United might stand a chance at landing their longtime target Alphonso Davies, whose future at Bayern Munich is no longer certain.

The Red Devils had already pursued the Canadian last season, but he ended up signing a contract extension that pushed back the deadline until June 2030.

For their part, the Premier League giants ended up snapping the services of Patrick Dorgu from Lecce. However, the young Dane has looked more comfortable playing higher up the field, so Jason Wilcox and Co. could resume their search for a new left-back this summer.

Bayern Munich willing to listen to Alphonso Davies offers

This season, Luke Shaw has been omnipresent in Man Utd’s starting lineup, whether under Ruben Amorim or Michael Carrick, while the departing Tyrell Malacia has been reduced to an afterthought.

However, the 30-year-old will need some backup next season with European nights expected to return to Old Trafford.

Therefore, United are examining several profiles to bolster the left-back role, and have recently rekindled their interest in Davies.

According to trusted German journalist Christian Falk, Man Utd have yet to make a concrete move for the 25-year-old, but he believes there could be an opportunity down the road, as Bayern Munich are willing to discuss a deal due to the player’s hefty salary and injury record.

“It is not true that Manchester United have held talks over signing Alphonso Davies this summer. This hasn’t been confirmed as of yet,” wrote the transfer market expert in his latest column for CF Bayern Insider.

“I know Bayern Munich would be open to discussing a deal, on the condition that it was a good deal for the club.  That’s because Davies has a really good salary (around €20m) and he’s often injured.

Nevertheless, Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany is a keen admirer of Davies, so Falk expects the former Manchester City captain to fight to keep the Canadian at the Allianz Arena.

“But I also know that Vincent Kompany loves this player! Before the season, when they were in contract talks with the Canadian, the head coach made it absolutely clear that he needed Davies (specifically his speed to support his coaching philosophy).

“So, it’s hard to give the left-back away. If he’s again on the pitch and doing his job, then it’s getting hard for any club to sign him. But at the moment, there is a door open.”

Should Man Utd pursue Davies?

Davies enjoyed a meteoric rise to stardom after joining the Bavarian giants in 2019. He rapidly cemented himself as one of the best left-backs in Europe, and was described as a ‘cheat code’ for his exceptional pace, which left his markers in the dust.

However, the full-back’s most recent campaigns have been characterised by recurring injuries and fitness issues. He has only made 17 appearances across all competitions this season.

Due to his long-term contract and high reputation, Davies would likely command a comprehensive transfer fee, not to mention a lucrative salary to match his current earnings at Bayern.

Hence, signing the Canadian would require a major investment, one that could certainly backfire if the player continues to struggle with injuries.

Therefore, Man Utd might be better off recruiting a more affordable alternative with a less eventful injury history, someone like Nathaniel Brown or Myles Lewis-Skelly.
