Camavinga deal moves closer

One player closely linked with a move to Anfield over the last couple of windows has been Eduardo Camavinga. The 23-year-old has been at Real Madrid since 2021 - winning two Champions League titles - but he is coming to the end of the line at the Bernabeu.

Despite the exits of Toni Kroos and Luka Modric the France international has been unable to nail down a starting berth in the Madrid midfield under Xabi Alonso and successor Alvaro Arbeloa.

A poor outing against Mallorca at the weekend - where he was blamed for the concession of the first goals - now appears to have sealed Camavinga’s fate.

Under contract until 2029 Madrid will be in a strong negotiating position if any teams come forward with a bid this summer - and Sport claims that Liverpool as well as Chelsea are in the running.

However the report warns that Madrid will not sell unless expressly asked to do so by the player himself - and would start the bidding at €100m (£87m).

That price is likely to come down in discussions due to Camavinga’s form and his place on the periphery in the Spanish capital teams squad.

L’Equipe in the player’s homeland of France also warned this week that Madrid were giving serious thought to selling Camavinga if the right kind of money was presented.

And despite his struggles this term there are plenty of reasons why Liverpool would benefit from Camavinga’s arrival. He is a world-class talent in the No6 position and can also feature at No8 as well as left-back in an emergency.

The elegant left-footer is renowned for his progressive passing and looks like he needs a fresh start rather than a player who has already peaked.

The door would appear to be opening to a deal for Camavinga and this is a situation that the Liverpool sporting director should be watching closely.
