Dorival Júnior's first knockout loss with Corinthians after 10 months

On the evening of last Saturday (28), Corinthians visited Novorizontino at the Jorge Ismael de Biasi Stadium, known as Jorjão, in a match valid for the semifinals of the 2026 Paulista Championship, and was defeated by a score of 1-0, conceding the goal in the second half. Throughout the tournament, the Alvinegro accumulated four wins, three draws, and three losses – 11 goals scored and eight conceded.

The duel also marked the first elimination of coach Dorival Júnior in knockout stages since he joined Corinthians exactly 10 months ago. Previously, the coach had advanced in all seven occasions in elimination context matches. In total, in this scenario, the coach has 13 games for Alvinegro, with nine wins, two draws, and two losses – 15 goals scored and five conceded.

Before the match against Novorizontino, the performance rate was 80.56% and dropped to 74.36%. Previously, the only defeat of the Corinthians coach in knockout tournaments for the club had been in the return leg of the Copa do Brasil semifinals, by 2-1, against Cruzeiro, at Neo Química Arena. However, in the penalties, the club from Parque São Jorge advanced – having won the first leg by a score of 1-0 at Mineirão.

So far, Dorival Júnior's knockout matches for Corinthians took place in the Copa do Brasil 2025 and Supercopa do Brasil 2026. In the first, he overcame: Novorizontino (third phase), Palmeiras (round of 16), Athletico-PR (quarterfinals), Cruzeiro (semifinal), and Vasco da Gama (final). In the second, he finally beat Flamengo, at Mané Garrincha Stadium in Brasília, by 2-0.

After being eliminated by Novorizontino in the state semifinals, the club from Parque São Jorge will return to the field only on the next March 11, Wednesday, at 9:30 PM (Brasília time), at Neo Química Arena, to face Coritiba in the fifth round of the Brazilian Championship.
