FC Barcelona have an important decision to make in the upcoming summer window. The defence at Hansi Flick’s disposal has left a lot to be desired, and the club needs to reinforce by adding another centre-back.

It seemed the club explored that option in January but eventually decided to go with versatile full-back Joao Cancelo. Meanwhile, Andreas Christensen has been sidelined with a long-term injury, and Ronald Araujo has had a few struggles, leaving Flick with just Eric Garcia, Pau Cubarsi, and Gerard Martin.

One player Barcelona have identified is Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck. The German international has emerged as one of the standout names in the European market due to his combination of physical power, defensive intelligence, ball-playing ability, and contractual situation.

His consistent performances in the Bundesliga have drawn attention from several top clubs, including Real Madrid, who are also monitoring his situation closely.

Schlotterbeck’s future has been the subject of intense speculation as his current contract is set to expire in the summer of 2027. For weeks, it was assumed he would leave Dortmund, but according to Fichajes, the German club has changed its stance and is now considering a contract renewal with a release clause of around €60 million.

This approach allows Dortmund to retain the €55 million-rated player while keeping the door open for a controlled departure if a major offer arrives, offering security for both the club and the player.

Barcelona face a challenge in securing Schlotterbeck, not only because Real Madrid are interested but also due to financial prudence and other priorities that have slowed aggressive moves in this market.

The German defender remains focused on his performances and is unlikely to rush a decision, making the upcoming summer window key for his ultimate destination.

Barcelona do not have a reliable left-footed central defender. Inigo Martinez filled that role well until recently, but the Spanish veteran chose to move to Al Nassr to spend the final years of his career.

It remains to be seen whether Schlotterbeck agrees to move to Catalonia. On paper, he is an ideal profile to lead the Barcelona back line alongside Eric Garcia and Pau Cubarsi. We will have to wait and see how things play out.
