Player departures have begun at Sheffield United, and Tahith Chong may be someone who parts ways with the Blades shortly

The 2025/26 regular season is over in the Championship, and it's one that Sheffield United will want to sweep under the rug immediately.

The Blades started the season terribly under Ruben Selles, losing their first six games in all competitions, which led to Chris Wilder being hurried back in just three months after he was sacked following their play-off final defeat to Sunderland last season.

It took another few months for Wilder to get used to his bloated squad, which he ended up adding to as well, with certain personnel who fit his style, and it wouldn't be until late November that they climbed out of the bottom three.

Despite threatening a late play-off surge, inconsistent results towards the end of the season saw Sheffield United's campaign peter out into a 13th-placed position - their lowest in the pyramid since winning League One back in 2016/17.

The offseason officially began on Monday for the Blades, as it was announced that both Ben Mee and Danny Ings would be leaving the club at the end of their current contracts as part of their big summer rebuild.

Tahith Chong should follow Ben Mee and Danny Ings out of Sheffield United this summer

Ings and Mee won't be the only two to leave Bramall Lane this summer, as Chris Wilder looks to freshen up his squad for the new season, and someone else who he may look to move on is Tahith Chong.

The Dutchman, who established himself in England at Manchester United, left Luton Town last summer following their relegation to League One, signing with Sheffield United towards the end of the transfer window for a rumoured £2.5 million.

Unfortunately, his first month at Bramall Lane would be incredibly tumultuous, with Ruben Selles being sacked just weeks later, and then he suffered a knee injury in the warm-up against Oxford United just a couple of weeks after that.

Chong wouldn't make his full return until early December, despite making some matchday squads before then, and since then, he's been in and, mostly, out of the squad, starting just seven league games all season, including the final two defeats of the campaign against Blackburn Rovers and Derby County.

He has just one assist and no goals to his name in 21 Championship appearances, and with Chris Wilder focusing on trimming some of the fat in the Blades squad this summer, it wouldn't be a surprise to see the 26-year-old on the chopping block between now and September.

Sheffield United would stand to recoup a fee for Tahith Chong this summer

Sheffield United will have to be extra careful with their finances this summer, given they're set to begin their first Championship campaign without Premier League parachute payments since they first went up with Chris Wilder back in the 2018/19 season.

Any potential opportunity to help bring in funds will at least be considered. Chris Wilder didn't deny that the Blades weren't against selling the likes of Sydie Peck or Gustavo Hamer this summer, and while Chong won't command as much of a fee as those two, he'll be worth some money.

The 26-year-old signed a four-year deal with the Blades last summer, so he still has plenty of time left on his contract, and Sheffield United will be hoping they can recoup as much of what they spent to bring him to the club in a potential sale just 12 months later.

Ultimately, that will be the one question mark surrounding a sale, though.

The higher-ups at Bramall Lane won't want to make a loss on any of their players this summer, and with less-than-ideal stats for an attacking player, it's hard to see where a multi-million bid for Chong comes from in the coming months, especially from a fellow EFL side.

But if one does come through, perhaps from a foreign side, it wouldn't be surprising to see Sheffield United accept it, as Chris Wilder looks to have a streamlined squad filled with the quality needed to make a push for promotion next season.
