Former Vasco midfielder Douglas says the 2014 Campeonato Carioca final defeat to Flamengo still stings more than 12 years on.
“In 2014 that Vasco v Flamengo final really hurt me,” he said, speaking on Lucas Tilty’s YouTube show.
“I did not see the ball go in, the wall was right in front of me. To this day people still send me that clip.”
Flamengo and Vasco met in the 2014 final at the Maracanã. Vasco took the lead and later had a chance to extend it with a Douglas free kick that remains debated.
His strike left the officials unsure whether the ball had crossed the line and, despite protests, referee Marcelo de Lima Henrique did not award a goal. Flamengo went on to win 2-1 at the Maracanã.
Looking ahead, Flamengo face Botafogo on Saturday 14 in the sixth round of the Brasileirão, with kick-off at 20:30 Brasília at Estádio Nilton Santos.
