Ellyes Skhiri’s Africa Cup of Nations adventure with Tunisia came to an end against Mali following a penalty shoot-out, while Farès Chaibi is in action on Tuesday.
Ellyes Skhiri and Tunisia were knocked out of the Africa Cup of Nations by Mali in the round of 16 at the Stade Mohamed V in Casablanca in Saturday evening. Mali went down to ten men in the 26th minute when Woyo Coulibaly was sent off, but in a game of few chances, the first goal wasn’t scored until shortly before full time when Firas Chaouat put the Eagles of Carthage 1-0 up in the 88th minute. Mali fought back though, with Lassine Sinayoko equalising from the spot following a handball in stoppage time (90’+6) to send the game to extra time.
There were no more goals, however, meaning Tunisia and Skhiri – who played the full 120 minutes – were forced into a penalty shoot-out. Tunisia missed three of their attempts, allowing Mali to advance to the quarter-finals 3-2 on penalties.
Chaibi still in the hunt
That leaves Farès Chaibi as the only Eintracht representative still at the competition. Algeria take on Democratic Republic of Congo on Tuesday 6 January at the Stade Prince Moulay Hassan in Rabat (kick-off 17:00 CET). The teams have drawn all three of their previous meetings, but this time there must be a winner.
