Jesse Marsch was thrust into the spotlight as Canada thrashed nine-man Qatar 6-0 at the World Cup, the nation’s first ever win, overshadowed by a horrific leg break for Ismael Kone.

According to Leeds Live, the midfielder was taken to hospital after a second-half incident. Tempers also flared at full time, with Marsch seen exchanging words with Qatar coach Julen Lopetegui.

Marsch declined to discuss the touchline row, saying it was not worth their time. In his press conference he added, “It was right in front of us and everyone could hear the bone snap,” and expressed sympathy for Kone.

Former Leeds academy graduate Alan Cawley criticised the American’s demeanour on Irish TV, accusing the 52-year-old of lacking class and urging him to cool his jets, while acknowledging Canada’s points return.

Clint Dempsey also hit back after Marsch said US staff had to beg players to sing the anthem when he assisted Bob Bradley in 2010 and 2011. The former US forward cited his own sacrifices and said Marsch should focus on his own team.

Marsch has led Canada since May 2024, his first senior role since leaving Leeds in 2023. He has won 15 of 34 games, reached the 2024 Copa America semi-finals, and last month signed a four-year deal through the 2030 World Cup.
