Duncan Watmore has retired from professional football at 32, choosing to begin a new career with PEAK4 as Head of Elite Performance & Business Development.
According to Sunderland Echo, the former Sunderland forward was a free agent after leaving Rotherham United and, despite interest from several clubs, has opted for a different path. He holds a first-class degree and a master’s in business.
Watmore made a strong impression after arriving from Altrincham, playing a key role in the club’s successful fight against relegation under Sam Allardyce. Two ACL injuries severely curtailed his momentum, and he departed at the end of the 2019/20 season.
He rebuilt admirably, establishing himself as a regular at Middlesbrough and Millwall.
After extensive reflection, he judged it the right moment to retire, offering thanks to every club, team-mate, staff member and supporter, and above all his family. He says the injuries he suffered gave him resilience, perspective and discipline.
He expressed enthusiasm for PEAK4’s mission to apply elite sport principles to business, leadership and workforce wellbeing.
Watmore ends his career with more than 50 goals from over 300 appearances.
