Durham attacker Mariana Speckmaier has joined Scottish Women’s Premier League (SWPL) club Hearts.

The Jambos announced news of the transfer via a post on their official club website earlier today.

The 28-year-old Venezuelan international has signed a one-year deal with the Edinburgh-based side. Hearts have paid an undisclosed fee to Durham to service the player’s services.

Speckmaier joined Durham from Australian Ninja A-League club Melbourne City last summer. She made 17 appearances for The Wildcats in Barclays WSL2 last season in which she scored four goals. Speckmaier helped Durham remain in the second tier for another season.

The player has played her football around the globe throughout her career to date and she will now test herself in Scotland for the first time with Hearts.

After joining The Jambos, Speckmaier said “I’m really excited. It’s a new experience for me so I’m looking forward to seeing what this league brings. I heard only good things really. An amazing team and club culture, which is very important to me.

“After coming off the season they had last year, it was really exciting and with Champions League as well, it was hard to say no. So far so good, the girls have been great and meeting all the staff has been really nice as well.”

Speckmaier’s move to Hearts comes at a time when several of the club’s title-winners from last season have secured moves to the English game.
